Chicago - The Musical Tickets for Sale

Chicago - The Musical is set in Chicago during the prohibition era. Written by Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb and with music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, this musical is a satire on the concept of “celebrity criminal” and subsequent corruption in the criminal justice system. Based on the 1926 play of a similar title by Maurine Dallas Watkins, the musical is about the crimes and criminals she reported on during the 1924 trials of murderers Belva Gaertner and Beulah Annan.

Chicago breaks down the fourth barrier and directly addresses the audience. It was co-writer Fred Ebb's idea to narrate the tale via a variation of vaudeville acts, not merely to demonstrate period but also produce the image of show business as life.

The show originally premiered on June 3, 1975 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City. Despite being nominated for ten Tony Awards in 1976, including Best Musical and Best Original Score, the musical’s cynical songs about America’s justice system and dark humor did not charm the audiences in the 1970s, and as such Chicago was overshadowed by feel good musicals such as “A Chorus Line.”

Chicago’s 1996 revival however became the longest running musical revival in Broadway history and won five Outer Critic Circle Awards, six Tony Awards and six Drama Desk Awards. In 2002, Miramax made Chicago into a film featuring Hollywood stars Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere and Catherine Zeta- Jones. The movie, like the musical, has had great success, winning six Academy Awards in 2004.
