Les Misérables, informally known as Les Miz or Les Mis, is a musical based on the 1862 novel by French playwright and poet Victor Hugo. The original French version of the musical features lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean–Marc Natel and music by Claude–Michel Schonberg. The English version of the musical, performed at the West End and Broadway,  features lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer in addition to material by James Fenton.

Set in 19th-century France, Les Misérables – the Musical is the story of a burly, strong and potentially violent French peasant,  Jean Valjean, and his pursuit of redemption after serving 19 years in prison for having stolen bread for his starving sister’s child. Jean makes the decision to break his parole and start fresh when a kind Bishop inspires him. However, despite his best efforts to begin his new life, Jean is relentlessly tracked down by police inspector Javert in the midst of a sweeping revolutionary period in France.
